Re-formation

I found myself at emergingchurch.org and the suggestion there is that the Church is in the midst of a “second reformation” built “upon the learnings of the first reformation.” This is a wild thought to me. I can’t deny that something like this is happening in the Church but it just blows my mind to be a part of it. But some people would definitely argue that I am not because Mars Hill is “too big.” There are a lot of labels and terms being used in this context. Mainly the emerging church, progressive church or progressive Christian.

I am still somewhat hesitant with the term “progressive.” Too many people mistake change for progress. Calling a church progressive just sounds like we’re saying we’ve finally got it or we’re finally getting somewhere, progress. Since language is always changing, a good way of understanding the rpesent meaning of a term is witha Google search. Doing a search on “progressive church” and “progressive Christian” comes up mostly with web sites and doctrines that I definately don’t want to associtate myself with.

I understand there is more meaning to the term than that. Being liquid and dynamic for example. But I’m not about to say that we’re making progress. The church always has and always will (until the return of our LORD) have a BIG problem: sin. Will this “second reformation” be any different than the first? Can we build on the first block and add another…and another, until we finally make it? No. But can we try? Yes.

Interesing thoughts Dustin. In some ways the church should always be going through a reformation. Traditions are good, but we should never be satisfied with the status quo. nv

personally i shudder at the term “progressive” those people publicising themselves as “progressive christians” here are kinda as loopy as the conservatives, just on another spectrum…

of course, i hate labels
